Together with all investors here in the Pangani district, we founded the "Friends of Maziwi" fund in 2005, which supports the protection of the reefs. The offshore reef chain with its sandbanks, such as the Mazvin Marine Reserve and the Fungu Wildlife Refuge, are a major tourist attraction due to their pristine, colorful and fish-rich coral world. Unfortunately, the Tanzanian government does not have sufficient resources to protect these areas from illegal fishermen , To counter this problem, the FOM fund was set up. In addition to the official entry fee of US $ 10 US Dollars $ 5US, a nominal fee of 2000 TZShilling will be charged. Through the money thus collected daily patrols are driven by the local fishermen. On the day they leave to monitor the reefs, they receive compensation or a loss of earnings from the FOM fund, as they were unable to earn any money from fish.
This system with the local fishermen has proven itself so far and should be expanded further. It also promotes environmental awareness and creates alternative sources of income for fishing.
Illegal fishing and dynamite fishing have fallen dramatically since the founding of the FOM in our region.
We thank all tourists who support us by their contribution to the FOM-Fund !!!!
